Arms Race
The Arms Race is a rapid, competitive increase in the quantity or quality of military or naval power by the United States and the Soviet Union. The codename for the creation of the world's first atomic bomb was Trinity. The United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Soviet Union test their first atomic bomb on August 29, 1949. The major goal of both countries was to have a better military.
In 1952, the United States developed the first hydrogen bomb. This bomb uses fusion to explode were as the atomic bomb uses fission to explode. The first ICBM or Intercontinental Ballistic Missile was test by the Soviet Union on August 21, 1957. An ICBM is used for long range explosive device with potential to cross oceans and continents.
In 1957, the United States developed their own ICBM called the Atlas missile. This was built for the Air Force and was first used as a first stage for satellite launch vehicles for half a century. The missile was over one hundred times more powerful than the bomb dropped over Nagasaki. The Minuteman Missile the Unite States developed is another land-based ICBM. As of right now, it is the only land-based ICBM in service in the United States. Today, the United States has approximately 5,113 nuclear bombs and the Soviet Union has about 1,499 nuclear bombs.
