Space Race
The Space Race is a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for space exploration. The first goal of the Space Race was to get the first man on the moon. The United States was the first country to do so. On July 20, 1969, the United States successfully put astronaut Neil Armstrong on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission. The United States was shocked that they were able to complete this mission and get ahead of the Soviet Union in the Space Race.
NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration and was established in July 29, 1958. It was established for the purpose of developing a state-of-the-art space exploration system to outdo the Soviet Union with their launching of Sputnik. In 1958, the United States successfully launched the first satellite to orbit the Earth, this satellite was called Alpha.
The first human in space was a Soviet Union astronaut by the name of Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. The first American in Space was Alan Shepard on May 5, 1961. The first American to orbit the Earth in February 20, 1962 was John Glenn. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova on June 16, 1963. In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared that the United States would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.
The Apollo 11 mission was the first spaceflight that landed American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Armstrong became the first person to step on the moon and spent about two and a half hours outside of the spacecraft. Both Armstrong and Aldrin collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material.
